Understanding REAL IDs

REAL ID was established in 2005 to help enforce security standards for all state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards to reduce identity fraud and fight terrorism. Since then, enforcement has begun in a four-phase approach, where REAL IDs are needed for restricted and semi-restricted areas in Washington, Federal facilities, nuclear power plants, and more. Starting May 7, 2025, REAL IDs (or acceptable alternatives) will be required to board domestic flights. So, what does that mean?

What Is A REAL ID?
Driver’s licenses or identification cards are REAL ID-compliant if they have some form of a star in the top right corner, either by itself, in a circle, or on a bear. That means you’ve provided the necessary documentation and are good to go.

Can You Travel Domestically Without A REAL ID?
There are some instances in which you can travel without a REAL ID. If your current license or ID is not compliant, you must provide another acceptable document, like a passport or passport card, to verify your identity. Additionally, if you have an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) issued in Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, or Vermont, those are also accepted as REAL ID alternatives. Note: These cards do not have the star marking noted above. If you do not have a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative, you will not be allowed through TSA checkpoints.

What Do You Do If You Don’t Have A REAL ID Or Acceptable Alternative?
If your license or ID is not REAL ID-compliant or an EDL, you’ll need to go to your state’s driver’s license agency and obtain a REAL ID. You will need to provide documentation with your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address, and lawful status. Some states may require additional documentation, so check for specific requirements before you go.
