Destination Highlights
Known as the "Jewel of Louisiana," the sparkling city of New Orleans sits just above the mouth of the Mississippi River where it meets the Gulf of Mexico. The city's legendary nickname, 'The Big Easy', gives a clue to the laid-back environment and genial atmosphere that draws visitors from all over the world, particularly during its spectacular Mardi Gras celebration. The city's colorful history boasts French, Spanish, African and American influences, creating a unique vibe that reflects both genteel elegance and Cajun spice (with a touch of voodoo thrown in). The city offers travelers one of the most diverse concentrations of exceptional cuisine in the world. Start the day with coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde, followed by a streetcar ride to the historic Garden District. Catch a free ferry to historic Algiers Point and view the famous Mardi Gras floats. Or experience the unique boutiques and noteworthy galleries that are signatures of the French Quarter.
