The medieval buildings were funded by the profits of the 16th & 17th century Sussex Iron Industry. Come & see the Mayfield Bonfire Boys & Belles, one of the oldest bonfire organisations in the country, who arrange a noisy, colourful torch light procession & firework display in the Autumn. Once the iron industry faded Mayfield became a hotbed of smuggling, known as owlers the farmers smuggled wool out of the country & returned with brandy & silk! An excellent walking & cycling territory with a 3 mile circular walk around the village or slightly further afield, explore the Cuckoo Trail, Bewl Water & Bedgebury Pinetum. Battle Abbey, Batemans, Rudyard Kipling's home (NT) & Charleston Farm house are well worth visiting. Enjoy beautiful walks, where there are many historical sites along the way.
