Reputed to be the ‘friendliest port’, the harbour has a popular Sunday market and excellent fish restaurant with fish and chips shops. An award-winning ice cream shop makes for a real treat, or you can watch the local catch being brought ashore. Boat trips can be taken to Coquet Island to see the bird sanctuary. The pretty village of Warkworth, with its hillside castle, river walks, pubs and small shops, is two miles along the coast and worth a visit. Only a few miles further is the historic town of Alnwick with its famous castle used in ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Downton Abbey’. The Duchess’ water gardens, which boasts a grand cascade and the world’s largest treehouse restaurant, are worth a visit. Amble is set at the start of this AONB Heritage coastline with some of the most unspoilt beaches and rugged coastline in England; there is also an abundance of footpaths and cycle paths. A great central location for exploring the whole of this fascinating county.
