Destination Highlights

Paihia is a small seaside town 240km north of Auckland. It is located on a sheltered inlet in the heart of the Bay of Islands, protected from the Pacific Ocean by the Russell Peninsula. The main tourist centre in the Bay of Islands however you have Opua to the south, Waitangi and Haruru Falls to the north and the historic town of Russell is 3km across the bay. Paihia is the departure point for fishing charters, cruises around the Bay of Islands Maritime Park and coach trips to Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand, Ninety-Mile Beach and the ancient Kauri Forests. Located in Waitangi a museum and cultural centre in the Treaty grounds where visitors can watch a re-enactment of the signing of the Treaty. Twenty minutes away in Keri-Keri find the oldest European building in New Zealand which was built in 1821-22, the oldest European stone building built between 1832 and 1835 which has served as a library, ammunition shore and today serves as a general store and museum.
