mountain isn’t covered by a tablecloth of cloud. Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and others were imprisoned, can be seen from up here. But it’s worth travelling across the bay and touring the island, which was used as a prison for centuries. It’s a truly humbling experience to witness the cells where prisoners were kept and to learn about the history of the political change that has occurred in South Africa over the last three centuries.
Cape Town’s beaches will make you sigh with happiness. The water here is rather cooler than in Durban but the surfing is just as good. The most popular beaches are Camps Bay, lined by great
restaurants and bars, and Clifton, which draws the young and the hip in droves.
If you are keen to do some DIY exploring, it’s an easy journey by car from Cape Town out into the stunning valleys of the Western Cape. Over 560 wineries compete for attention here. Constantia and Darling being just two of the areas that entice wine aficionados. Another great and well-trodden tour is the Garden Route: a scenic highway that travels through the southern Cape all the way to the Eastern Cape border. The road winds through ancient forests and liberal arts communities, past lush golf courses and close to mountain retreats. EV
