Mesmerising Muriwai
MURIWAI, NEW ZEALAND
The rustic rawness of Muriwai’s landscapes starkly contrasts against Auckland’s urban metropolis vibes. This coastal community is just 40 minutes west from the city centre — a perfect getaway
for city dwellers and nature- loving tourists. Driving in
from Auckland, take the North Western Motorway, continue onto State Highway 16 and turn off at Waimauku onto Muriwai Road.
Upon arriving at Muriwai, slip off your shoes and dig your toes into the volcanic black sand. The gorgeous stretch of black sediments came from ancient volcanoes in the vicinity, one of which is the majestic Kaipara Volcano that erupted millions of years ago. Today, the entire west coast in North Island of New Zealand is draped in a natural cape of dark sand beauty.
Stretch out and relax by the sea, or stroll hand in hand with your loved ones to soak up the majestic view of crashing waves. The gushing Tasman Sea brings with it a robust, steady stream of sea breeze. Languid walks by the beach are usually accompanied by wind in the hair, and some gentle scarf tugging.
Surfers from around the globe travel to Muriwai for the thunderous curls the Tasman Sea brings. A favoured surfing spot is at the southern end, where Muriwai Beach meets Maukatia (Maori Bay). Most
