Escape to the perfect winter destination with hot springs, happening festivities and sizzling plates.
Winter in Budapest definitely is one-of-a-kind, as this melting pot of culture at the heart of Europe offers more ways than one to keep you warm, cosy and full of the holiday spirit.
Considered as one of the spa capitals of the world, one can start off a warm winter vacation by staying at a spa hotel, or enjoying thermal baths around the city as Budapest has a multitude of thermal springs and baths.
You can also keep warm here by drinking! Budapest has been a major wine-producing country for centuries, and is most renowned for the Tokaj— a sweet, dry, full-bodied and rich dessert wine, and the Bikavér also called ‘Bull’s Blood’ which is a heavy dry red wine.
Then there’s the famous Hungarian liqueur, Palinka — a strong brandy distilled from a variety of fruits (but most commonly apricots or plums). There’s also the Unicum, a bitter aperitif that has been around since 1790, said to aid digestion.
