Ready for your retail therapy?
Discover the art of shopping in Bali at these locations.
Denpasar. A place where old meets new, Denpasar is Bali’s capital. Here,
you’ll find a wide range of fine-quality silk, linen, cotton, laces and buttons, traditional Bali dresses and find a vast collection of gold, silver and diamonds at a reasonable price.
Ubud. The centre of art and craft communities, Ubud is the best place to get handicrafts. It has huge stores that house a variety of intricately designed gold and silver jewellery. This is also where smooth, unpainted, beautiful statues made of high-quality wood can be bought, as well as paintings, traditional woven textiles, sarongs and Balinese ceremonial items made of colourful gold-painted cloth they call ‘Prada’.
Candidasa. This is where you can buy traditional lontar books. Candidasa is also famous for the double woven ikat material called ‘kain geringsing’, believed to have magical powers. You’ll also find a unique type of basketry here; firm and tightly woven with rich texture and detail. These baskets’ distinctive colour come from the smoking process they undergo.
Kuta Beach. Considered the shopping Mecca for tourists and locals alike,
Kuta Beach is where one can find local and international fashion brands such as Camper shoes and Rip Curl. This is also where Duty Free Shopping (DFS) Bali
is located. DFS Bali carries an impressive portfolio of the world’s most renowned brands which include Cartier, Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany to name a few.
Lombok Island. If you’re on a hunt for pottery, furniture and textile, Lombok is the place you should head to. This is where unique, high-quality handmade products are painstakingly made by craftsmen who come from generations of experts. Lombok is famous for its innovative and beautiful bamboo, teak and rattan furniture.
With all these great shopping finds, everyone’s sure to take home more than snap shots and memories from their trip to Bali. Luggages are sure to be packed with a little piece of paradise.
“Tahiti has been spoiled for many years, but Bali is one of the few cultures with origins in one of the great ancient cultures which is still alive.”

Keep these shopping tips in mind
• Carry cash. Most shops don’t accept cards.
• Don’t shop with a tour group. Shop on your own at modest shops.
• Shop in the morning. Shops are eager to make an early sale, so your chances of getting better bargains are higher in the morning.
• Bargain. Start by offering 30% less of the amount offered or even up to 1/3 of the price given by the vendor.
• Bargaining is like a chess game for the Balinese. So, keep smiling during the whole process.
