Set in sweeping gold rush country, amid the stunning Macedon Ranges, the historic town of Kyneton traditionally draws visitors looking for a ‘back to nature’ escape from the daily grind. What you may not know is that Kyneton has also gained a reputation in recent years as something of a culinary capital, becoming one of the “in” places to visit for foodies and those who appreciate authentic farm to plate culinary gems.
Located only an hour’s drive from Melbourne, those in the know make a culinary pilgrimage to stock up
on supplies. In particular, on the second Saturday of the month, the Kyneton Farmers Market in St Pauls Park becomes the hub of activity for the town, after which visitors and locals branch out for late breakfasts or long lunches in the cafés and pubs. The town is certainly passionate about food, so much so that it boasts an impressive concentration of small businesses specialising in top quality dining and culinary products.
A booming town during the gold rush, Kyneton’s history is alive on its streets. Visitors can still admire the old bluestone churches and buildings at its centre, where antique shops, art galleries and cafes sit side by side, many of them still boasting their original facades and ornate verandas. No more evident than when visitors head to beautifully restored Piper Street, where you’ll find acclaimed restaurants like Annie Smithers Bistrot and Star Anise along with casual dining at Pizza Verde and
The Royal George all drawing crowds, various awards and critical praise. All should be booked in advance.
Kyneton Bushland Resort manager John Nissen’s favourite place to dine is Annie Smithers. In fact, Annie is affectionately referred to by locals like John, as the Maggie Beer of Victoria. Her small French Bistrot offers a truly unique dining experience, the menu changes almost daily depending on what fruit and produce is harvested from her kitchen garden in nearby Malmsburry. Catering to the ‘food and wine savvy’ award-winning chef and owner Annie, also hosts ‘masterclass’ for those eager to learn the tricks of the trade. Her classes are widely popular and range from two hours to a full day throughout May to October 2012. Bookings are essential.
For those keen to test their own culinary skills, head to Piper Street to pick up some of Emelia’s award winning and totally natural sauces, relishes, dressings and more. Pop into the Piper Street Food Company specialising in the ancient French art of creating terrine, sausage, rillettes and pâtés using the best Central Victorian produce. Owner and Charcuterie Damian Sandercock, guarantees his products will create a successful picnic, light supper or shared table.
