Historical Hainan
Let’s begin with a bit of history. Visit the Five Officials’ Temple in Haikou that was built in the late 19th century to honor five officials who were exiled to the island by the emperors during the Tang and Song Dynasty. The Hai Rui Tomb, built in 1589, is the resting place of a righteous Ming Dynasty official of Hainan origins. You can also hop over to the Hainan Provincial Museum
to learn about the ethnic minorities of Li and Miao and see more than two million artifacts, mainly from the Xisha artifacts recovered from underwater.
Located just outside of Haikou in Xiuying Village, the Xiuying Fort Barbette was built in 1890 to defend south-eastern China during the Sino- French War. The fort’s five cannons are still intact and viewable at the site today. Also, you can visit the ancestral home of the famous Soong Sisters found in northeast of the Island in Wenchang.
