Los Angeles is known for its iconic hotspots such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Santa Monica Pier, and Getty Museum. These tourist attractions draw huge crowds every year, but peel back the layers of each neighborhood and you’ll be starstruck by many hidden gems this expansive city has to offer.
Something to consider before you go — Los Angeles is an enormous city developed by dreamers and imaginative personalities. You’ll stumble upon countless pockets of culture everywhere you go, giving each outing the possibility of adventure. With that in mind, your best bet is to pick an area and spend a day or two exploring, both on and off the beaten path. The City of Angels’ traffic is not for the faint of heart, and you’ll benefit from spending as little time in the car as possible. But never fear, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Los Angeles.
Now that you’ve been prepped as an Angeleno, read on to explore six must-visit hidden gems just waiting to be discovered in LA.
1. Stroll Santa Monica’s Montana Avenue
Only a few blocks over from bustling Santa Monica Boulevard, Montana Avenue is a much quieter breath of fresh air spanning 10 beautiful tree-lined blocks. It’s decorated with more than 150 trendy boutiques, specialty restaurants, and cute cafés. It runs right into Brentwood, an affluent neighborhood with tree-lined streets and beautiful homes worth strolling by.
Experience a sumptuous cheese bar with delicious wine pairings at Forma and eat your way around the world, sampling a variety of domestic and international cheeses and wines to suit every palate — it’s one of the most delicious things to do in LA. For a romantic mid-day brunch, visit Art’s Table for some of Art’s deliciously prepared steak, salmon, chicken, and more. When you’re finished, make sure to stop by Sweet Lady Jane for a mouthwatering freshly prepared confection made without preservatives (the chocolate triple berry cake is a customer favorite).
2. Hike The Pacific Palisades
Hiking is one of the most popular things to do in Los Angeles — it’s so popular, it might as well be considered an official sport! Jokes aside, it’s a great way to enjoy the fresh air as well as an excuse to slip into some comfy athleisure outerwear. While Runyon Canyon is known for its panoramic skyline, locals love hiking in the Pacific Palisades for the area’s beautiful coastline, rugged cliffs, and stunning ocean views.
One of the most popular moderate hiking trails in the Pacific Palisades is the Temescal Canyon Trail. It’s just over three miles round-trip and rewards you with stunning views of the ocean and surrounding canyons.
For more of a challenging hike, visit the Los Liones Trail. The hike loops you around for more than four miles and (after an elevation gain of nearly 1,200 feet) rewards you with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Bay.
3. Cruise The Pacific Coast Highway To Malibu
If there were any reason to get into your car for an extended period on your trip, cruising up the Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, is that reason. Roll down the windows and take in the cool ocean air as you drive right along the famous plunging cliffs of the stunning Southern California Coast — it’s definitely one of the most scenic things to do in LA.
On your way, stop at Rosenthal Estate Wines, a winery along the PCH for memorable tastings on a breathtaking outdoor patio. A few miles ahead, stop at Duke’s Malibu for a great surf-themed atmosphere and tasty tropical cuisine — don’t forget to request an outdoor table to enjoy unforgettable ocean views while you dine. Leave room for the Hula Pie, a towering treat the restaurant is famous for.
For an even more immersive experience — literally toes in the sand — keep going until you reach Paradise Cove Beach Cafe. Enjoy massive tropical drinks served in whole pineapples, coconuts, and watermelons, and significant portions of sumptuous seafood. You’re welcome.
4. Experience Downtown’s Eclectic Side
Cracking open a book might not be the first thing you think of doing in a downtown metropolis, but you may be surprised by some of the unexpectedly fun things to do in Los Angeles — it’s a city that will surprise you in the most unpredictable ways. Why not try something a little less touristy for a change? The Last Bookstore is a treasure of a hidden gem located in downtown Los Angeles. It’s housed in an old bank building and features an incredible collection of new and used books. It’s also home to several art installations, making it a unique and interesting place to explore.
While you’re already on a literature-inspired excursion, pop into Nimbus Coffee and be transported into a miniature wizard world with a Harry Potter theme. The cafe’s interior is decorated with Hogwarts-esque decor, from the house banners hanging on the walls to the floating candles that give the space a magical glow. The menu is also full of magic, with drinks like the Notorious Black, a charcoal rosemary latte.
Finally, head to the Library Bar, an upscale spot tucked away in the Financial District that looks like a magical mixture of a well-stocked library and a well-stocked bar. Browse the shelves while you sip on drinks with literary names like the Adventures of Blackberry Finn, Tequila Mockingbird, and Gone with the Gin.
5. Make Your Way To The South Bay
Venice and Santa Monica are some of the most popular beaches for visitors, but you can experience a more local atmosphere by heading less than 15 miles south of La La Land. For one of the most beachy things to do in LA, start by walking along the Strand in Hermosa Beach. Pedestrians, joggers, roller bladers, and cyclists share this inviting beach-front sidewalk where you’ll pass by plenty of places to stop, shop, and dine. Paradise Bowls is the place if you’re looking for a refreshing açaí bowl, Vista for inventive cocktails and local fare, and Brother’s Burritos for a breakfast burrito that covers fresh ingredients with gooey cheese and packs it into a warm flour tortilla — yummm.
Since you’re already at the beach, take advantage of sunbathing on the golden sands. The Pacific Ocean along this part of the coast maintains a cool temperature year round, so you may end up just dipping your ankles in the water instead of plunging in. The setting sun over the aquamarine waves is a viewpoint like no other. Bring layers and enjoy the view.
6. Find Your Free Spirit In NoHo
North Hollywood, aka NoHo, is a creative bubble buzzing with lesser-known thrills around every corner. Stop by the Republic of Pie in the NoHo Arts District for a speciality coffee and a slice of their famous cookies & cream pie (or choose your favorite). It’s worthwhile to stick around for a bit and enjoy live local musicians in the evenings.
Its imaginative resurgence from the 1970s made NoHo a hub for comedy clubs, so be sure to check out places like HaHa Comedy Club or the Comedy Chateau. Be prepared to laugh your socks off, and enjoy an adult beverage or two while you’re at it. For vintage finds and unique boutiques, head to the neighboring Studio City and walk along Magnolia Boulevard to explore shops with a flair of old Hollywood glamor like Yes Baby!
